Department Manager - Nashville, NC

The Department Manager will COACH and MANAGE the activities of assigned production departments and team members with focus on the responsibilities described below. The Department Manager is part of the production leadership and is expected to support plant-specific programs as well as programs initiated by our home office.


Safety. Enforce Clayton’s safety culture by adhering to and enforcing the following:

●        PPE

●        Department-specific safety/hazard/risk prevention

●        Lock-out / tag-out

●        Participate in Safety training meetings as requested for continuous education on new guidelines

●        Conduct routine tool and equipment safety inspection as required

Communication. Consider each team member opportunities and strengths.

●        Provide fair and objective performance coaching

●        Foster an environment of praise and celebration of victories

●        Support team member experience programs, trainings, and events

●        Own new team member experience considering retention and training

●        Ensures that the Communication Center are used during the morning huddles.

●        Coach, correct and counsel team members. Utilize the progressive discipline documentation system appropriately.

●        Perform team member evaluations.



●        Read and check off orders as built

●        Ensure traveler is signed correctly

●        Enforce Gateway Program. All defects must be addressed in station.

●        Ensure defects are corrected by the root Team Member to teach & eliminate repeat occurrences

●        Conduct routine material inspections to avoid shortages and building defects into the home

●        Participate in Quality training opportunities as requested for continuous education


●        Read all orders and review prints – plan and prepare your team for successful runs the day before

●        Empower team members by delegating strength-based tasks. Teach and Coach; don’t do the work.

●        Procures training and re-training for team members.

●        Ensures that line rolls are met, consistently.

●        Promote a spirit of teamwork within and across departments.

●        Participate in the inventory process.


●        Ensure clean department(s) before, during and after work using 5 min clean-ups.

●        Involvement in ISO14001 initiatives (recycling program)

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

●        Demonstrate continuous willingness to learn, grow, and gain understanding as a leader in our organization

●        Demonstrate effective motivation skills and techniques to encourage team to meet performance objectives

●        Demonstrate honesty in all situations to cultivate an environment of trust

●        Demonstrate fairness in all decisions and when holding team members accountable

●        Understands prints, reads orders, and prepares team for production run in advance to ensure production goals are met

●        Be willing to see the big picture and not just the areas of assigned responsibility

Education and Qualifications:

●        High school diploma or equivalent required

●        BS/BA in management or related, preferred

●        Two to 5 years of experience managing team members

●        Homebuilding industry experience, preferred

●        Manufacturing experience, preferred 

Genera Skills:

Language Skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of peers or team members.

Mathematical Skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Rules and Regulation. All team members must adhere to all safety rules and regulations required by local, State and Federal authorities, wear the appropriate personal protective equipment necessary to perform the job in a safe manner and will follow all safety rules per the Company’s Safety Policy.
